SPRINGFIELD - William G. Matlack passed away on Saturday, December 8, 2012, at 2:57 PM. William was born on July 27, 1932, in Springfield to Ross and Wilberta Matlack.
William is survived by his wife, Vickie L. Matlack; daughter, Nancy (Jim) Ward; son, William G. Matlack, Jr., all of Springfield; and brother, Jack Matlack of Gillespie. He is also survived by cousins, Geraldine (Edward) Maxey and Judy (Harold) Chapman; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Malinda Matlack; and brother, Charles R. Matlack.
William graduated from Feitshans High School, received his Bachelors of Science degree from Western Illinois University, and his Master of Education degree from the University of Illinois, Champaign.
He was employed by the Springfield school system from 1956 through 1966 as a business teacher and held coaching positions in football, baseball, and golf. He was nominated in 1967 to run as the democratic candidate for Sangamon County Treasurer, later being appointed Springfield City Treasurer. In 1970, he became Controller of Charleston County Hospital in Charleston, SC, and returned to Springfield as a Finance Officer. In 1984, he assumed dual responsibilities with the Illinois Community Board as Comptroller and as Dean of Administrative Services at the State Community College in East St. Louis until his retirement in 1987.
William served in the United States Air Force, and has been a member of the American Legion, Eagles Club, and Elks Club for several years.
In 2001, William was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder (amyloidosis) and received a bone marrow transplant in 2001 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Therefore, memorial contributions may be made to the Gift of Life Transplant House, 705 2nd St., SW, Rochester, MN 55902.
