Read, Shirley Catherine (Lincoln)
65, of Peoria, Arizona passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of June 9, 2016 due to complications as a result of her Amyloidosis, a terminal disease. Shirley leaves behind the love of her life, husband of 32 years, Robert S. Read, her daughter Michele Kuhns and her brother Merrill Pruett. Shirley was known and loved by her friends for her engaging personality, kind heart and love of animals, especially horses. At every restaurant and shop Shirley frequented, she always introduced herself and learned everyone's names and their life stories. Shirley was a genuine friend to all who knew her. Shirley was born in Redfield, South Dakota on February 12, 1951 to Nellie Yada Lincoln Finley and Earl Lincoln, Jr. and was the eldest of two children. A military family, the Lincolns moved throughout the US. In Shirley's teens, her parents divorced and Shirley, her mother and her brother moved to Arizona. Shirley attended Agua Fria High School from 1965 to 1968 but graduated from Apple Valley High School in Apple Valley, California in 1969. Shortly after high school, Shirley married and had only child Michele. Later Shirley would divorce and return to Arizona with her daughter. During her life, Shirley had a number of different careers including working for Arizona Health Plan, Phoenix Police Department, Maricopa County Sheriff's Department, and CIGNA Healthcare. In 1994, Shirley realized her passion for horses and became involved in the breeding and showing of Quarter horses. Shirley was an active member of the local horse community and belonged to the AQHA, APHA, and NSBA. In 2010, Shirley placed third in Trail at the American Paint Horse Association (APHA) World Show. She was a wonderful owner of pets and still found the strength to say goodbye to her blessed horses when the time came for them to have new homes
