Sandra O. Howerton (Sandy) of Orleans, MA, surrounded by her family, and Pastor Sally Norris of the Federated Church in Orleans, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2012 after a brief illness.
Sandy was the beloved wife of Peter Howerton and was blessed with 51 plus years of marriage. She was the daughter of the late Ralph and Dorothy Corliss Ormsby formerly of Eastham. She was the loving mother of Carl W. Howerton and his wife Laura of Marshfield, MA. She is also survived by her daughter Deborah L. Howerton and her husband Joseph Baglio of Chestnut Hill, MA. She was the doting grandmother to Audrey Howerton and Tori Baglio and is also survived by her brother William Ormsby of Lakeland, Florida, and her brother-in-law William Howerton of Lyndhurst, Ohio, several cousins, nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Orleans High School, Class of 1957 and a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Green Mountain Jr. College in 1959. Following her graduation, she worked for the Unitarian Universalist Association at their Boston headquarters in the Education Department. She was also a valued employee of Gavin Sales of Norwell, MA as well as the Office Administrator at Christ Church Episcopal in Plymouth, MA.
Sandy was an active volunteer with the Orleans Chapter of the Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary, and the Orleans Improvement Association where she was a board member of both organizations. Additionally, Sandy had been on the board of the Orleans Historical Society and was also an active member of the Orleans Yacht Club. Each summer Sandy was committed to volunteering her time for the annual Pan Mass Challenge Ride.
