SOUTH HADLEY - Sallie Elizabeth Hughes Pitt, 74, lover of art, music, and English Springer Spaniels, died on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at Baystate Medical Center with her family by her side.
Born April 9, 1938, in Springfield, she was the daughter of Alton and Beatrice (Bolton) Hughes.
Sallie graduated from South Hadley High School in 1956, then moved away after graduating from Elmira College in 1961. She returned permanently to South Hadley in 1985.
She was a member of Center Church in South Hadley and St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Holyoke. She was an arts and music librarian at the Forbes Library in Northampton.
After retirement, Sallie volunteered at the Gaylord Library, and was an active member of the South Hadley Chorale, the South Hadley Historical Society and the Welsh Society of Western New England. Sallie truly loved music and sang in the choir's at both Center Church and St. Paul's. She enjoyed collecting art, gardening and taking long walks with her dogs.
She will be forever missed by her son William and her daughter-in-law Cheryl Pitt; her daughter Leslie Chehade and her husband Patrick of Granby; along with her five beloved grandchildren, Danielle, Aiden, Lauren, Isabella and Katherine; and her great-granddaughter Skyler; as well as her brother John Hughes and his wife Linda of Livermore Falls, Maine.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved son James in 1988.
