Michael (Mickey) R. Wherry, Sr., 56 of Bear, DE passed away in the comfort of his home surrounded by family on Monday, October 3, 2016.
Mickey was born in Pittsburgh, PA on September 25, 1960, son of the late James and Irene (Getty) Wherry. A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering and moved to Delaware to begin his career with ICI Americas. He later chose a new career in construction management. His most recent employer was Cecil College where he was a Construction Project Manager.
Mickey was a devoted, active father who was very involved with his sons. An avid youth soccer fan, he was a coach, referee and board member with Kirkwood Soccer Club for many years. He enjoyed serving as Recreational Director for Delaware Youth Soccer Association (DYSA), and created the DYSA Interclub League. Mickey also served on the President's Cup Committee for U.S. Youth Soccer Region 1. As a doting dad, he was a Boy Scout leader and a Band Dad for the William Penn Marching Band during the time his sons participated in those activities.
Mickey will be missed by his wife of 29 years, Rita (Flickenger) Wherry; and his sons, Mickey Wherry, Jr. and wife, Natalie, and Brian Wherry. He is also survived by his brother, James Wherry and wife, Kim; and his many in-laws, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center and Christiana Hospital ICU, as well as the staff of Brandywine Home Therapies for their care and compassion. -
