VINCENT ANTHONY BROOKS, JR.

Died Sunday, July 11, 2010, at Washington Hospital Center, surrounded by family. Vincent was born on April 15, 1940, in Washington, DC. He was a 1958 graduate of St. John''s College High School and a 1963 graduate of Syracuse University, where he played lacrosse. Vincent was a veteran of Vietnam and peacetime, having served in the Army from April 1, 1964, until his honorable discharge on August 17, 1970, at the rank of Captain. He received numerous honors including the Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal. Following his military service, he served with the D.C. National Guard, where he rose to the rank of Major. His subsequent civil service career included positions at the Department of Commerce, the Small Business Administration and the Department of Energy. He was active in the leadership of the Department of Energy Chapter of Blacks in Government. He began and led the DC-Baltimore Chapter of Amyloidosis Support Groups Inc. after being diagnosed with the disease in 2004. Vincent was the beloved husband of 48 years of Geneva R. Brooks; father of Renee B. Catacalos (Damon), Vincent A. Brooks, III, and Stacy E. Brooks; grandfather of Catherine and Louis Catacalos. He is also survived by niece Jacqueline Bundy, nephew James Tolliver and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent A. Brooks, Sr., and Marie Elizabeth Brooks, and his infant son, Mark David Brooks. Relatives and friends may call at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 15th and V Streets, NW, Washington, DC, on Monday, July 19, 10 to 11 a.m., where Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Interment at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, Tuesday, July 20 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Vincent Brooks, Jr. Memorial Fund, c/o Amyloidosis Support Groups Inc., 232 Orchard Drive, Wood Dale, IL 60191.
